Day Three, Yay Me

Yesterday I ended up feeling some die-off symptoms for sure.¬† I spose that’s to be expected after consuming¬† an entire cup of coconut oil. ¬†I’m a “go big or go home” type of person.¬† Obviously.

For me, it’s really all or nothing.

Part of the reason for the fast was that I wanted to get my drinking under control.¬† That sounds really dramatic.¬† *ugh*¬† I never drank much in my early 20’s.¬† The experiences I had as a teen were drinking to the point of blacking out.¬† I hated that out of control feeling and didn’t drink for years.¬† In my late 20’s I started discovering wine and the fact that I really enjoyed it.

I don’t know when it officially becomes a problem but I know I didn’t want to go a night without it.¬† I was also developing a tolerance and needing more and more to get my pleasant little buzz.

I knew I needed to check myself and that I was sabotaging my health goals.¬† Even lower carb wine is¬†not a great choice¬†if you have candida overgrowth.¬† It’s not great for staying in ketosis.¬† It’s not great when you feel like you *need* it.

There is nothing wrong with enjoying wine or beer or whatever in moderation.  But you have to be honest with yourself and evaluate if it is contributing to your goals.  Especially if you have a family history of alcoholism (and I do)…

I’m not saying I’m an alcoholic, or that I’ll never enjoying a drink again, I just want to give my body a break.¬† Plus, trying to do any sort of detox and continuing to drink is…really dumb.¬† You’re liver is going to be overwhelmed.¬† You’re likely to stir up toxins that you can’t process and they’ll just redistribute through your body…all while making you feel like death.

I did notice when I got super strict and low carb the desire to drink went away almost completely.  It makes me wonder if my desire to drink wine was, in part, due to the fact that little yeasty bastards were demanding more sugar- in any form.  Alcohol and Candida

I’ve talked to some people who had candida issues and they couldn’t stay out of the bread bowl.¬† Or they get shakey if they go 4 hours without eating.¬† Some people become full blown alcoholics.¬† Or, like me, it’s damn near impossible to resist the siren song of¬†sweet. ¬†I am really proud of myself for taking these steps.¬† And it’s so important to “pat yourself on the back” when you make steps to break bad habits or better your health.¬† It’s not easy.¬† But it is worth it.¬† Especially since I¬†do¬†have a lot on my plate.¬† My kids are all home for summer break and they¬†follow me around all day. ¬†Not silently.¬† No.¬† They want to be fed.¬† They want to be entertained.¬† They want to tattle on a sibling.¬† All.¬† Day.¬†Image may contain: 5 people, including Sierra Rose, people smiling, child and closeup

Switching gears a bit- I’ve been doing pretty well.¬† I decided to do a workout and I noticed more little red bumps with white crystals on my abdomen.¬† Not as bad as last time.¬† What I’ve been doing has had the undesired effect of making me run to the bathroom for round after round of hot watery explosions.¬†See the source image
Not the intended effect.

I decided I need to add bentonite clay and psyllium capsules to get more of a real detox- not a “just ate sushi at a buffet in a dive at 4 pm” detox.

I also hope to use this time to not only break bad habits and feel better, but to grow closer to God.¬† I’ve really been slacking, spiritually, of late and fasting is a great way to shake off spiritual apathy.

Coconut Oil and Candida

Yesterday I did end up eating some keto cheese, egg and asparagus muffins and then more steamed asparagus and cauliflower.  I had taken my afternoon pills from the cleanse pack and oops!  It was a digestive enzyme and was giving me a tummy ache.  So I ate some food, but all super clean and low carb.

Today I am aiming for¬†just¬†bulletproof coffees and teas.¬† I’m focusing on coconut oil because it is amazing for getting ketone production ramped up- which practically means energy.¬† I don’t think I could do any kind of zero calorie fast because I just have too many responsibilities.¬† It’s not like I can sit around and meditate all day.¬† Though that’d be¬†great. ¬†

Another great thing about coconut oil is that it acts like kryptonite against candida.  See the source image

Coconut oil is amazing at¬†killing candida and fungus without doing any harm to your body.¬† Many people may feel awful when they first start using coconut oil because they are having die-off symptoms and toxins are being released.¬† I’ve been using coconut oil for years so I have a high tolerance.¬† When you first start out, you definitely want to take it slow and see how your body reacts.¬† Maybe a teaspoon on an empty stomach to start.

Since a cup of coconut oil has¬†almost 2,000 calories¬†it’s a great addition to a cleanse to make it more doable.¬† I can get that easily blended up in coffee and tea throughout the day.¬† I don’t recommend taking it straight (though you certainly can!) it is incredibly hard to swallow it.¬† I have to go to my happy place mentally to get it down.¬† It’s¬†much¬†better blended into a frothy coconutty latte. 20180803_1156428093723573880223056.jpg

I’m doing pretty good so far.¬† I feel hungry for sure but I am enjoying the clear thinking, calmer nerves, and steady energy that come with having high ketone levels.¬† My allergies are still much better.¬† Yesterday I visited a friend with two very fluffy cats and nary a sneeze out of me.

I’ll adjust the fast to suit me as needed.¬† I think it’s probably pretty harmless to add in some cleans foods- eggs, veggies, butter; as needed.

Fat of the Land

I’ve already addressed that you want to ignore the (big-agriculture funded) advice of the American Heart Association.¬† You want to avoid an oil that inexplicably comes from a grain or “vegetable”.¬† Corn, soy, canola, margarine….don’t even feed it to your dog.

So what oils are you supposed to eat?

About six years ago I was nursing my third baby.¬† I wasn’t producing enough milk and she was experiencing constipation.¬† Around that same time I was learning the truth about healthy and unhealthy fats.¬† I threw away our vegetable and canola oil, along with our “butter-esque” spread.¬† I replaced everything with virgin coconut oil and real butter.

I added tons of natural fats, especially coconut oil, to my diet.¬† My milk and my baby’s health improved dramatically.¬† My baby even took on a faint coconutty scent that others commented on.¬† She still loves coconut.

My coconut baby!¬† She had such a glow ‚̧

The myth (still propagated to this day!) that saturated fats were unhealthy came from a study by Ancel Keys in the 1950’s.¬† He wanted to show that fat was the cause for all our health woes.¬† His results showed anything but, but he chose to cherry pick the data, dump what didn’t support his hypothesis, and presented his findings to the scientific community.¬† Here’s a funny, quick video that sums it up-¬†funny truth bomb video

We all switched to whole milk, organic when possible (we’re a family of five, six if you count the 90 lb. dog, on a single income!).¬† I cook with lots of butter.¬† We’ve consumed a lot of saturated fat for the past 6 years.

When I started a part time job last year people were shocked at my age.¬† They assumed I was a good 5-8 years younger than I am.¬† I’m 31.¬† I got asked where I go to school!¬† I assume this is because of the anti-aging properties of healthy saturated fat and avoiding the aging properties of vegetable oils.

It’s frustrating to me that people¬†still¬†think saturated fats are unhealthy.¬† What happened when everyone switched to skim milk, margarine, and 6-11 servings of grain a day?¬† Obesity, heart disease, diabetes…it all skyrocketed.¬† To make up for a lack of flavor food manufacturers added extra starch and sugar to low-fat products.¬† Snackwell cookie, anyone?

All of this was pushed on the public.¬† You’d only know the truth if you knew how to do your own research.¬† It makes my blood boil a bit.

The fact is, saturated fat is healthy.¬† It’s where the majority of our fat calories should be coming from.¬†¬†Saturated fat Vindicated¬† Saturated fat is going to be shelf-stable.¬† It doesn’t oxidize at the rate of fats from vegetable sources.¬† When you eat an oil that has been chemically squeezed from a grain it is going to cause a cascade of inflammation and oxidation in your body.¬† These oils aren’t shelf stable.¬† They degrade quickly.¬† Therefore they all undergo a process of hydrogenation to some extant.¬†¬†Vegetable Oils and Oxidation¬† Since oxidation is basically causing us all to age and eventually die, we all want to limit it as much as possible, capiche?¬†¬†420d9af0cc93caebd56b2f1bff54ca6cI implore you to do your own research.¬† Literally chuck your vegetable oils in the garbage.¬† Replace it with real butter (yum!), coconut oil (amazing for you!), olive oil, avocado oil, and natural animal fats.¬† Your food will taste better, you’ll feel better, I promise!

Eat Fat to Burn Fat

First, let me set up some of my weight/diet history for you.¬† I was always very skinny and active as a kid.¬† I loved sweets and chocolate with a passion.¬† I’d make myself cocoa or chocolate malt-o-meal every day before school.

When I got married I was pretty tiny.¬† But after having two more kids (I have three) my weight crept up and up.¬† I was eating healthier and working out more, so…what the ever-living heck?!?!¬†¬†You can’t out-exercise a bad diet.¬† Bad eating habits catch up even to naturally thin people.¬† I was eating too many damn carbs.

I set what I thought would be a realistic goal.¬† My “fighting weight” of the past couple years.¬† I zoomed down to it within¬†8 days.¬†¬†I was a believer in this diet but, wow!¬† I’ve been losing half a pound of body fat a day.¬† I know it is body fat because I have a blue tooth scale that measures hydration and muscle mass, along with weight.¬† My muscle mass and hydration have gone slightly up as the fat has been melting off.

I’ve been keeping my carbs under 50 grams, my fat well over 100 and protein between 60-90 grams.¬† I shoot for 70-80% of my calories from fat.

So your thinking, all right, that sounds good but SWEET MOTHER OF PEARL how am I going to eat that much fat?!?

All right, calm down a sec, cause it’s not that hard.¬† Really.

It helps if you are a coffee person like me.¬† You can easily wave your keto wand over your coffee to turn it into a metabolic-stoking “fat bomb” delight.

While my coffee is brewing I add a tablespoon of butter from grass fed cows, a teaspoon of MCT oil, and a generous scoop of coconut oil to a blender cup along with a bit of xylitol.  When my coffee is done is dump it into the blender cup, blend it up, and dump it back into my mug.   Easy peasy!

This is known as “bulletproof” coffee.¬† It provides your body with 50-60 grams of fat.¬† It will keep you full for hours as you torch fat like a maniac.¬† All these healthy (you better believe it!) saturated fats are great for brain, skin, and hormonal health.

It’s really not as gross as it sounds.

One thing you should be aware of is that all this fat requires a bit of time to digest.¬† I normally down my coffee then launch into my workout before my kids wake up.¬† If you drink this and immediately work out the results won’t be great.¬† I promise.¬† Take a 10-15 minutes at least before any strenuous activity.

I realized on this journey that I am still “programmed” to buy leaner cuts of meat, like chicken breast.¬† That’s not helpful.¬† I’m switching to buying dark meat cuts like chicken thighs or drumsticks.¬† Most of the nutrients is found in the dark meat anyways.

Most of us who grew up in the 90’s were taught to avoid dietary fat (especially saturated!) as if it would instantly clog our arteries and make us fat.¬† It’s was a load of¬† poo propagated by big agriculture.¬† If I need proof, as a resident of the Upper Midwest, I just drive past some local fields.¬† Corn and Soy.¬† For miles.¬† Farmers get big subsidies to grow these franken-GMO crops that are destroying our health.¬† I could go on and on but trust me when I saw traditional fats are incredibly healthy.¬† Fats created in a lab are making us fat, sick and diabetic.¬† ¬†What is Healthy Fat? ¬† ¬†Well, that, and sugar and our 6-11 servings of grains a day.¬† Sorry to say, ya’ll, but if the American Heart Association poo-poos it, you know it’s good for you!!!¬† AMA Corrupt and Wrong
